Equiluminance in Apostolescu & Loutherbourg

The first person I thought of when reading on equiluminance was a Romanian illustrator named Matei Apostolescu, some of whose work I have saved on my computer. The edges of the lion's main are fairly similar to the rest of the mane, except at the very bottom near the grass.

The edges of the mane stand out dramatically. Because it's extremely easy to achieve equiluminance when using a computer, and probably a lot of artists do so unintentionally, I decided to also post a painting.

Philip James de Loutherbourg's Defeat of the Spanish Armada. I noticed the general similarity of the grays between the men in the boats on the left and center (but if you are nitpicky, you'll see the differences when you zoom in close).

Suddenly some men in the boats are bright red, and while others are a dull brown.
